EFB III Class 3 Hardware System

True Avionics Quality
Teledyne's EFB III provides operators with true avionics-quality equipment. This high-performance Class 3 EFB system utilizes the same components as those used to design and manufacture the Airbus Onboard Information Terminal (OIT), which is a factory-installed option on the Airbus A330 and A340 airplanes. As such, it had to meet Airbus' very stringent requirements in terms of design, construction, human factors, reliability, safety and maintainability, as well as physical, functional, and environmental characteristics. With this new high-power information system, Teledyne has met the challenge to provide an avionics-grade device at a significantly lower price, without compromising standards.

True Optical Performance
Teledyne's Display Unit (DU) uses a proprietary optical stack assembly with special coatings to produce best-in-class performance. The EFB III LCD display has met all the Airbus display performance specifications that are required for primary flight displays. So when it comes to optical performance, the EFB III's DU provides the optimum balance between brightness, contrast ratio and reflectance, resulting in avionics-quality readability for all lighting environments, including sunlight and a dark cockpit at night.

Cross-over Functionality
With many EFB systems, the failure of a processor unit results in the loss of its associated display unit. In addition to the obvious loss of information for the affected pilot, this kind of event can result in cockpit workload issues that force pilot-flying/pilot-not flying duties to be realigned with the remaining operating EFB. To prevent this situation, Teledyne's EFB III has cross-over display/control capabilities. Even with the unlikely failure of certain processor unit components, both pilots still have nearly uninterrupted viewing capability of EFB information on their respective display units, and the remaining EFB can easily control the pilot-flying/ pilot-not flying assignments without delay.

Installation

  • A typical EFB III installation consists of two EFBs per aircraft. Each EFB is comprised of a 12.1-inch or 10.4-inch color Display Unit (DU) that is connected to the computer Processing Unit (PU) located in the avionics bay.
  • The touch screen DU is the primary user interface and it is side window mountable.
