Teledyne Controls to Supply the Flight Data Acquisition and Monitoring Systems for the U.S. Navy E-6B Mercury Aircraft

LOS ANGELES, CA - December 8, 2009 - Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that it has been awarded a contract of approximately US$5 million by sub-contractor
L3 Communications to supply the flight data acquisition system, ground-based flight data monitoring tools, and flight training simulator crew debriefing station for the U.S. Navy E-6B Mercury aircraft. As part of the contract awarded to Boeing by the U.S. Navy to upgrade their fleet of 16 E-6B aircraft, Teledyne Controls will provide its latest generation Digital Flight Data Acquisition Unit (DFDAU), along with a suite of ground-based applications including AirFASE® for flight data monitoring and analysis, Vision for 3D flight visualization and event investigation, and ReVision for digital flight crew briefing and debriefing. Delivery of the systems is expected to start in mid 2010.

"We are very pleased that L3 Communications has recognized Teledyne Controls' long and extensive experience in aircraft data acquisition and monitoring, and we are excited to work with them on the U.S. Navy E-6B upgrade program," said Masood Hassan, vice president and general manager of Teledyne Controls. "We have been involved in several other military aircraft health monitoring programs and we look forward to supporting the U.S. Navy's data requirements for this critical airborne command, control and communications airplane."

The U.S. Navy will use Teledyne Controls' commercial-off-the-shelf systems to monitor the E-6B aircraft for a wide range of health issues, including airframe structural life expended, engine performance, avionics system fault reporting, and flight operations quality assurance (FOQA). The system also offers growth capability to incorporate future specialized PHM (Prognostics and Health Monitoring) data requirements.

The Teledyne airborne and ground systems being supplied to the E-6B program provide a comprehensive capability for the E-6B Program Manager to immediately implement M-FOQA (Military - Flight Operations Quality Assurance) as required by the DoD and U.S. Navy directives. Teledyne is a leader in providing end-to-end airborne through ground station analysis FOQA systems to scores of airlines and military customers throughout the world.

The data acquisition solution offered for the E-6B aircraft is an enhanced configuration of Teledyne's standard commercial Digital Flight Data Acquisition Unit (DFDAU), which is installed on almost 60% of the delivered Boeing 737NG, 757 and 767 aircraft serving airlines worldwide. It is designed to collect and analyze the E6-B flight data to monitor the condition of the aircraft. Once the data has been retrieved, the AirFASE® tool will enable the U.S. Navy to analyze the flights, taking into consideration recommended operational limits, and highlight abnormal events and trends. Vision, a sophisticated 3D flight animation system will allow them to rapidly visualize complex flight operations information to gain a clearer picture of the many complex and interrelated actions that occur during an event or incident. Revision, a PC-based flight crew training solution, will close the loop by providing a digital flight training simulator platform to review events and brief the flight crew accordingly. Combined together, Teledyne Controls' systems provide the U.S. Navy with an unparalleled end-to-end solution for aircraft data monitoring and flight operations quality assurance.

The U.S. Navy E-6B, a modified Boeing 707, provides survivable, endurable, reliable airborne command, control and communications in support of the President, Secretary of Defense and United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM).
