LOS ANGELES, CA - May 25, 2006 - Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that Qantas, the largest airline in Australia has ordered Teledyne Controls' Wireless GroundLink® quick access recorder (WQAR) for installation on its A380 aircraft. The Australian carrier, which recently ordered twelve Airbus A380, with options for twelve more, will use Teledyne's WQAR to fully automate the recording and transmission of its flight data.
"We are very pleased Qantas has expanded their use of our Wireless GroundLink system to their A380," said George Casper, Teledyne Controls' director for the Asia-Pacific region. "We look forward to continuing working with them on streamlining the data collection process across their fleet." Since its introduction to the market, Teledyne's Wireless GroundLink QAR has been selected by 23 operators across the globe and is flying on over 300 aircraft.
A significant element in safety management and aircraft maintenance programs, Teledyne Controls' Wireless GroundLink quick access recorder is a unique patented system, designed to provide aircraft operators with an immediate, reliable, and cost-effective solution for data recording and transmission over cellular infrastructure. Offering unprecedented reliability, the GroundLink system can record and wirelessly transfer flight data from the aircraft to the ground, without any media handling and human intervention. Using a Teledyne proprietary protocol, the raw data recorded during flight is compressed, encrypted and then transmitted via cellular technology and the Internet to the airline's or Teledyne's ground-based data center for processing and analysis. With the Teledyne Wireless GroundLink solution, airlines can significantly reduce data delivery delays (the data is typically available within 10-15 minutes after an aircraft has landed, versus several days or weeks with manual data retrieval). Additional operational benefits are realized since human resources, equipment costs and data-loss associated with manual retrieval methods are virtually eliminated.
