Teledyne Controls' TeleLink® Installed on First Business Jet Equipped with Future Air Navigation System (FANS)
LOS ANGELES, CA - July 7, 2004 - Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that its TeleLink® Data Link system performed FANS (Future Air Navigation System) communications on the first Business Aircraft, a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), on a North Atlantic flight. FANS capability improves communications between flight crews and air-traffic controllers; Teledyne Controls' TeleLink® constitutes the central component for FANS operation on the BBJ.
"The TeleLink® system is an open and flexible solution designed to integrate existing and emerging navigation and communication technologies," said Mark Shoemaker, Teledyne Controls' director of Sales and Service for the Business Aviation market. "The ability to play a key role in the FANS operational environment gives our TeleLink® system a significant edge over other competing products." TeleLink® is already in service on four BBJ operating in a FANS environment over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Initially used by commercial aircraft, and now introduced to Business Aviation, FANS is designed to enhance communications to and from an airplane, by automating the transfer of critical information through instant text messages. FANS lessens the reliance on frequently congested radio communications, reduces flight crew workload, and saves fuel through improved routing. Teledyne's TeleLink® provides a keystone component in FANS operation - it serves as the central communication device between onboard avionics systems and communication networks.
Teledyne Controls' TeleLink® solution is a light weight digital communication system dedicated to Business and Commuter Aviation, and designed to exchange datalink messages and graphics between an airplane and a ground-based datalink service provider or host computer. Based on a modular and open architecture, the TeleLink® system provides the capability to connect to a variety of communication networks, such as VHF radio, SATCOM, and MagnaStar® telephone. Offering all the benefits of an ACARS (Aircraft Addressing and Reporting System), the TeleLink® system features two-way messaging, Pre-Departure Clearances (PDC), digital Automatic Terminal Information System (ATIS), Oceanic Clearance Delivery (OCD), flight planning and following, textual and graphical real-time weather, as well as Out-Off-On-In (OOOI) Reporting.
