German Airline Hapag-Lloyd Automates Flight Data Recording and Transmission With Teledyne Controls' Wireless GroundLink®
LOS ANGELES, CA - November 15, 2004 - Teledyne Controls, a business unit of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY), announced today that Hapag-Lloyd, the German flag carrier of Europe's leading tourism group TUI AG, has placed an order for Teledyne Controls' Wireless GroundLink® (Wireless Quick Access Recorder - WQAR) for use on its A310 and B737 Classic fleets. Teledyne's WQAR will enable Hapag-Lloyd to fully automate the recording and transmission of its flight data and therefore reducing risk of data loss involved with traditional manual procedures. "After several months of successful trial, Teledyne Controls' Wireless GroundLink® has proved to be a highly reliable solution with outstanding data recovery rates," said Captain Eckhard Jann, Safety Pilot in the Investigation Team at Hapag-Lloyd. "Moreover, Teledyne's WQAR will enable us to retrieve flight data upon landing in any airport, without having to wait for the aircraft to be back to its home base. This is a significant benefit as this will permit to identify and address issues in a timely manner in case a critical event occurs." With this new order, Teledyne Controls supplies the last building block of Hapag-Lloyd's Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) program, a quality assurance process designed to improve operations and increase safety through the analysis of flight data on a routine basis. As an integral part of the FDM system implemented at Hapag-Lloyd, Teledyne's Wireless GroundLink is to be used in conjunction with AirFASE®, a flight data measurement, analysis, and reporting software tool that the airline has recently purchased from Teledyne Controls. "We are very pleased to assist Hapag-Lloyd to implement an efficient and integrated FDM system that meets their requirements," said Hans-Juergen Neufert, Teledyne Controls' Senior Manager of Sales and Service for the Europe region. "Teledyne Controls' FDM offering includes a wide range of FDM tools that are designed to combine easily. We can help our customers build their own unique FDM system, while providing them with one single point of sales and service." A significant member of Teledyne Controls' FDM product line, Wireless GroundLink is designed to provide aircraft operators with an immediate, reliable, and cost-effective solution for data recording and transmission. Offering unprecedented reliability, the GroundLink system is designed to record and wirelessly transfer flight data from the aircraft to the ground, without any media handling and human intervention. The raw data recorded during the flight is compressed, encrypted and then transmitted via cellular technology and the Internet to the airline's or Teledyne's ground-based data center for processing and analysis. Using the Teledyne Wireless GroundLink system, the airlines can reduce data delivery delays (the data is available within 10-15 minutes after an aircraft has landed, versus several days or weeks with manual data retrieval), cut human and equipment costs associated with manual data retrieval, and eliminate data loss that can reach 30% with conventional manual methods.
